Alex Rodriguez-Roig believes in making a difference in our community. As the CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, he oversees the organization that opens doors of knowledge for more than 8,000 children through after-school and summer programs. He is an alumnus of Florida International University Alumni Association, serves on the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Professional Association Board of Directors, and most recently his organization received a $4.8 Million from MacKenzie Scott.

1. What advice would you give to professionals who have taken on a CEO or executive role for the first time?

You don’t need to have all the answers. engage your team and board.

2. What is your best advice to navigate the first 90 days?

To have several other nonprofit CEOs you can reach out to and bounce ideas or questions.

3. What is your best advice on how to work with the board?

Know your program well. Work with them to find solutions but don’t expect them to have all the answers. You are the leader and make sure you are offering sound suggestions. Be a good listener.

4. What is your best advice on leading a team?

Lead with compassion, understanding, fairness, and transparency. Don’t take things personally.

5. What is your best fundraising advice?

Make sure you can enthusiastically convey your nonprofit’s purpose. Be a motivator. Do your homework, and know as much as you can about the individual or corporation before you meet with them. Listen to every detail they say. And be honest.

6. Share your greatest failure as a CEO and executive and the lesson learned. We often learn the most from our failures.

Don’t judge a book by its cover. I have sometimes received the most support from the least expected and vice versa.
